Staying afloat in the gaming industry is not an easy task. Game developers have to compete against a deluge of new titles, and they are pitted against incumbents with established brands and massive resources. In the midst of such rigorous competition, game developer PlayPlayFun is able to achieve international success. General Process of Producing Games
Every game that we develop starts with the initial conceptualization. This is where the team brainstorm and decides what kind of games that we would like to develop next. After we have a plan, we will do research about the game and do competitive analysis to find out the potential competitors of the game. At this stage, we may opt to go back to conceptualization if we find something that we are not happy with and the cycle continues. It is hard to pinpoint the main development stages for a game as different game has different requirements. For example, for Shadow of Naught in which it is a lot more story based, we spent more time refining the story, visuals and audios. This is because the game is meant to invoke emotional connection with the players. Therefore, the story, visuals and audios need to work together in sync to achieve this purpose. On the other hand, a game like The Bonfire, it took us a lot more time to do level design as we need to ensure that every progress in the game feels natural, not too difficult and yet still challenging. Revising and Beta Testing Games Once we are happy with the concept and the result of the analysis, there will be a continuous cycle of development – testing – refinement, until we are ready for a closed or open beta testing with the public. The main challenge during beta testing would be to get enough active users to play the game and report their feedback. There’s no one formula that fits all, but having a social media presence with prompt support definitely helps to keep the community engaged. Closed and open beta testing serve different purposes for our games. Closed testing is used to test a certain part of the game or new features that we are going to implement. Open beta testing, however, usually features the full game to be tested by players. So, we do not have preference over this as they both serve their own different purposes. Developing More Projects As we have grown to be a developer/publisher, we would definitely be interested in receiving game pitches from developers. We would like to see screenshots, gameplay trailers and, if possible, game demo. We would like to add more platforms into our portfolio. For now, our games are mostly mobile, however, we have plans to port our games to the console, Nintendo Switch, PS4/5 and Xbox. For now, we have plans to bring The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands and The Bonfire 2: Uncharted Shores to the console market. As for hiring, we are likely to hire freelancers in order to achieve this goal.
