Wishful Thinking - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

A fairy-godmother is sent to help a scullery maid. Instead of winning a prince’s heart, the little kleptomaniac wants to steal from him instead, and uses her fairy’s powers to execute the heist.

Lucinda, a budding fairy-godmother, hopes to spend her life granting the wishes of those in need. Her dreams come true when she is assigned to Cindy, a teenager who is abused by her stepfamily, and whose only wish is one night of fun at the prince’s ball.

Lucinda’s happily ever after takes a wrong turn once Cindy shows her true colours. Instead of an innocent little girl, Cindy is a raging kleptomaniac whose definition of “fun” involves robbing people blind.

Cindy wishes to break into the Royal Castle in order to steal their most priceless artefact – a slipper made of expensive Venetian glass – and frame her stepfamily for the theft. Forced to grant her request, Lucinda finds herself caught in the middle of a heist, and learns that she is the one who should be careful of what she wishes for.

Character List

Cindy

Picture
Age: 18-20
Gender: Female
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Wily and intelligent, Cindy is far from a damsel-in-distress.

Although she seems like an innocent young ingénue, her innocent persona is only used to hide the revenge-crazed kleptomaniac that she truly is.

In order to change her fate, she will not hesitate to frame her rotten stepfamily for a crime, or blackmail her fairy-godmother into being her accomplice.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) We’re going after a slipper that’s made of Venetian glass. Trust me, they won’t miss it. Who would wear something so impractical?

  2. (Happy) My stepfamily was terrible to me. Instead of playing the part of the downtrodden heroine, I’d prefer to settle the score!

  3. (Disappointed) If you refuse to help me, you would sentence a neglected child to a life as a scullery maid. That would look awful on your resume.

  4. (Angry) Lucinda, get us out of here! I spent half of my life with my stepfamily, and I won’t spend the rest of it in a dungeon!

Lucinda

Picture
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Kind and compassionate, Lucinda has a heart for those in need, and hopes to spend the rest of her career helping the downtrodden.

Righteous and principled, she tends to see “good and bad” in black and white. However, these lines are blurred when she meets Cindy, who thrusts her into an adventure that challenges her moral code.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Do not fear, child. I am your fairy godmother, assigned to grant—why are you smiling at me like some sort of maniac?

  2. (Confused) You want me to break into the royal castle and steal everything we can. Are you aware I’m a fairy godmother, not a wicked witch?

  3. (Terrified) I have tried so hard to reason with the child. I’ve even threatened to turn her in. But, by the gods, she’s insane! Who wishes for a screaming unicorn as their getaway ride?!

  4. (Angry) Cindy, if you wish for me to get us out of the castle, kindly refrain from shouting in my ear.

Charles

Picture
Age: 18-20
Gender: Male
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Charming and refined, Prince Charles is the heir to his kingdom’s throne.

Given his dutiful personality, he bows to the whims of his smothering parents, and begrudgingly attends the masked ball that they have arranged to find him a bride.

Although he secretly hopes that something would disrupt the event, he wasn’t prepared for the magical heist that occurs within his halls.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) I’m tired of bowing to their every whim. I want to be free, and—why do I suddenly feel the urge to break into song?

  2. (Sad/Disappointed) Most princes would be delighted to meet their true love. I, on the other hand, am terrified.

  3. (Happy) That girl’s appearance was the best thing that happened during this party. Granted, she was a criminal who left a unicorn-shaped crevice in our main hall, but she made a memorable exit!

  4. (Afraid) Y—you won’t hurt me. You’re a fairy godmother. You’re supposed to turn toads into princes, not the other way around!

Roland

Picture
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Sir Roland, who serves as a Captain in the Royal Guard, has been tasked to manage the castle’s security during the royal ball. Meticulous and careful, Roland has taken every precaution to ensure that the castle is well guarded. Unfortunately, his defences were not prepared to withstand Cindy’s magical strategies, and her heist threatens to end his career.

Lines:

(Neutral) Fret not, your majesty. We’ve stationed guards all around the vital areas of the castle.

(Happy) Fair evening, my prince. Are you ready for tonight’s procession?

(Sad) I failed your family, your highness. By the time the sun rises, I suspect that your father would have selected my replacement.

(Angry) By the gods, she fled the ballroom on a screaming unicorn. How hard would it be to track that down?!

Production Questions

Each project has its own budget, requirements, and plans for distribution. If you are cast for any of these roles, you'll be contacted by our casting representative, and will be able to negotiate your rates with them.

If you are cast, your clips will be used for internal pitching purposes. If you are cast, our students will use your clips to create pilot episodes, which will be showcased to our network of producers.

Your audition clips will not be used without your permission.

If this project generates enough funding and support from our network, we will broadcast our pilot materials to the public. Until then, selected voice actors will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

We are generating pilot materials for internal pitching purposes, and are currently unable to publicly disclose the cast list.

If we are able to generate enough funding and support to make this project public, we will disclose a full list of our cast and crew. Until then, our cast and crew will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

Submission Questions

Please ensure that you’ve sent your clips to the right email – admin@mediacontex.com.

Please make sure that you haven’t incorrectly typed “mediacontext”.com instead.

If all else fails, please contact Tiffany at hello@story-sight.com for assistance.

Of course! We keep all of our auditions on record. Even if you aren’t cast for this project, we’ll contact you about future opportunities.

Alternatively, you may contact us at admin@mediacontex.com and tell us what your preferred accent is. We’ll let you know if any VA opportunities come up.

If a character has a "Standard American" accent, we'd like you to use a typical General American accent for all of your lines.

Sorry, friend. Auditions will be closed after the deadline we've listed. However, we'll regularly update our auditions page with new projects, and you won't be short of opportunities.

You're welcome to submit 1-3 takes per line. Compile all of your takes for each line into a single file.

Label each line according to their line number. If there are four lines for your character, you should have four files in total.

Sure. Please separate each character’s lines into separate ZIP folders, and label each file as:

“CharacterName 1_YourName_Audition”

“CharacterName 2_YourName_Audition”

You may include all of your files in the same email. Label your email subject as: "[CharacterName1], [CharacterName 2] _YourName_Audition”

We're always looking for new talent. Feel free to share your demo reel, profile, website, etc. in your audition email.

If you're shortlisted for our roles, you'll hear back from us approximately 2-5 days after the audition deadline has passed.

Please don't hate us if we don't send you a reply. Due to the number of auditions we receive, we may not be able to respond to each email. However, we appreciate your submission, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!

Unfortunately, MediaContex's team has a lot on their plate, and we may not be able to deliver feedback to individual VAs. However, we're very grateful to you for reaching out, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!
