Otherworld - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

In order to help his impoverished family, a teenage gamer joins a notorious guild of players, who illegally collect and sell valuable in-game items at high prices.

Eighteen-year-old Felix struggles with a life of poverty. Things get worse once his family misses multiple rent deadlines, and their landlord threatens to evict them if they do not meet their next payment.

In order to escape his dismal reality, Felix turns to Otherworld, a popular multiplayer RPG game. His luck changes for the better when he is invited to join a guild of players who illegally collect and sell rare items for real money on third-party marketplaces.

Not only does Felix’s new job allow him to pay back his family’s rent, but it gives him sums of money that he never thought he would obtain. Unfortunately, Felix’s newfound fortune comes at a price – the longer he works for the Guild, the harder it is to stop, and it’s only a matter of time until he gets caught.

Character List

felix

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Resilient and independent, Felix’s cutthroat upbringing has taught him that fortune only comes to those who work for it.

At first, Felix joins the Guild in order to save his family from eviction. However, his noble intentions are thwarted as he continues to work for them, and he develops a newfound sense of arrogance that drives him towards getting caught.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Let me get this straight – You grind like there's no tomorrow until you find one or two rare items? Is the money even worth it?

  2. (Happy) I made enough money in the past hour than my dad’s pension has paid him in two months. When's the next raid?

  3. (Sad) I need to feel secure. I want to know that I’ll still have my home when I wake up tomorrow. That's why I have to do this.

  4. (Angry) You don't know the first thing about me! It's easy to judge from your ivory tower, but you don't know what it takes to survive!

Lightglade

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 25-30
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Forced to drop out of university in order to start her life as a single mother, Lightglade is no stranger to hardship. She juggles multiple jobs in hopes of raising enough money to care for her daughter.

Although she joins the Guild for similar reasons to Felix, she is wise enough to know when to stop. Guided by a motherly instinct, her loyalty compels her to warn Felix about staying in the Guild any longer than he should. However, she is disappointed when her advice falls on deaf ears.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Welcome to the Guild, Felix. Don't be intimidated by how intense our players are. They’re pretty chill when you get to know them.

  2. (Happy) You’ve got skills, kid! Keep up the support and we'll have this dungeon cleared in no time!

  3. (Sad) My daughter means the world to me. I wish I could be the mother she deserves.

  4. (Desperate) You have enough money, Felix! If you don’t pull out now, you’re going to land in serious trouble.

Nightbreaker

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Known only by her alias, Nightbreaker is a recruiter in the Guild. Intelligent and calculative, she is a valuable ally to those she likes, and a dangerous enemy to those she doesn't.

Shrewd and manipulative, she reaches out to skilled but desperate gamers who are looking to earn a quick buck. She persuades them to stay in the Guild by presenting herself as their friend, but she will not hesitate to abandon them when times get tough.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Don’t let this opportunity pass by. If you join our Guild, you’ll make more money than you could imagine.

  2. (Happy) Nice work, kid! Keep this up and I'll give you a higher cut of the earnings.

  3. (Warning) You have no idea who you’re messing with. I made you who you are, and I can break you just as easily.

  4. (Worried) This isn’t good. If your web browser’s configuration has been altered, your device might be compromised.

Equinox

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Equinox is Felix’s in-game avatar. Although he is twice Felix’s age, he shares the teenager's personality and mannerisms. Given that Felix is a competent gamer, he has gathered an impressive array of skills and items for Equinox to use on the field.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) If we can distract it long enough, its weak spot will be open to attack. We just need to survive long enough to cause a distraction.

  2. (Happy) Good shot, Lightglade! These goblins don't know who they're messing with.

  3. (Angry) I did not travel through monster infested swamps, scorching desserts, and blistering winds just to be told that my treasure is in another dungeon!

  4. (Determined) Get the item! I’ll hold them off!

FAQ

Production Questions

Each project has its own budget, requirements, and plans for distribution. If you are cast for any of these roles, you'll be contacted by our casting representative, and will be able to negotiate your rates with them.

If you are cast, your clips will be used for internal pitching purposes. If you are cast, our students will use your clips to create pilot episodes, which will be showcased to our network of producers.

Your audition clips will not be used without your permission.

If this project generates enough funding and support from our network, we will broadcast our pilot materials to the public. Until then, selected voice actors will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

We are generating pilot materials for internal pitching purposes, and are currently unable to publicly disclose the cast list.

If we are able to generate enough funding and support to make this project public, we will disclose a full list of our cast and crew. Until then, our cast and crew will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

Submission Questions

Please ensure that you’ve sent your clips to the right email – [email protected].

Please make sure that you haven’t incorrectly typed “mediacontext”.com instead.

If all else fails, please contact Tiffany at [email protected] for assistance.

Of course! We keep all of our auditions on record. Even if you aren’t cast for this project, we’ll contact you about future opportunities.

Alternatively, you may contact us at [email protected] and tell us what your preferred accent is. We’ll let you know if any VA opportunities come up.

If a character has a "Standard American" accent, we'd like you to use a typical General American accent for all of your lines.

Sorry, friend. Auditions will be closed after the deadline we've listed. However, we'll regularly update our auditions page with new projects, and you won't be short of opportunities.

You're welcome to submit 1-3 takes per line. Compile all of your takes for each line into a single file.

Label each line according to their line number. If there are four lines for your character, you should have four files in total.

Sure. Please separate each character’s lines into separate ZIP folders, and label each file as:

“CharacterName 1_YourName_Audition”

“CharacterName 2_YourName_Audition”

You may include all of your files in the same email. Label your email subject as: "[CharacterName1], [CharacterName 2] _YourName_Audition”

We're always looking for new talent. Feel free to share your demo reel, profile, website, etc. in your audition email.

If you're shortlisted for our roles, you'll hear back from us approximately 2-5 days after the audition deadline has passed.

Please don't hate us if we don't send you a reply. Due to the number of auditions we receive, we may not be able to respond to each email. However, we appreciate your submission, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!

Unfortunately, MediaContex's team has a lot on their plate, and we may not be able to deliver feedback to individual VAs. However, we're very grateful to you for reaching out, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!
