Only Human - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

A teenager, who nearly dies in a serious accident, is saved when most of his body is replaced with robotic parts.

Twenty-year-old Virgil is a Protector, a member of an elite task force that defends his city against a dangerous group of criminals.

When Virgil is severely injured by one of the criminals’ traps, the Force’s medics are able to save his life, but they have done so at a price. Most of Virgil’s body is replaced with bionic parts, and he is equipped with an advanced weapons system that can protect him against another attack.

Due to his new abilities, Virgil is praised as a hero. However, he is also regarded as a weapon instead of a person. Teetering on the line between man and machine, Virgil slowly learns to master his new powers, but also discovers what it truly means to be human.

Character List

Virgil

Picture
Age: 18-20
Gender: Male
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Stalwart and loyal, Virgil has devoted his life to protecting his city. Despite his youth, he has quickly become one of the Force’s most promising Protectors.

Even after he recovers from his traumatic accident, his loyalty drives him to rejoin the Force. However, given his cybernetic appearance, he begins to question if he truly wishes to do his duty, or if he is simply programmed to act.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) My joints feel fine. I don’t trust myself to throw a ball without causing collateral damage, but I’m fairly sure that my arm won’t fall off in the process.

  2. (Sad) How can I be sure that I’m still me? I might just be a robot that’s programmed to think this way.

  3. (Angry/Warning) Release the hostages, or I’ll have no choice but to use extreme force.

  4. (Afraid) Listen to me! My defense system is offline. I won’t be able to protect you.

Sabrina

Picture
Age: 18-20
Gender: Female
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Daring and resourceful, Sabrina is a member of the Force’s I.T. department. She is assigned to facilitate all communications between the Protectors and their Headquarters.

Although she and Virgil have just met, she develops a fast friendship with him, and has monitored his condition by communicating closely with the medics who brought him back to life. Given the fact that she is more comfortable behind a desk than on the field, she worries that she may not be much help if Virgil ends up in trouble again.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) We’ve tracked the criminals to the warehouse on your left. Proceed with caution. The place may be rigged.

  2. (Relieved/Happy) Thank goodness you’re all right! I thought I’d never see you again.

  3. (Sad) You’re more than the sum of your parts. Your accident might have altered your appearance, but it hasn’t changed who you are.

  4. (Angry) Virgil’s a person, not an object! He’s not a machine that you can discard.

Celeste

Picture
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Kind and intelligent, Celeste is a member of the Force’s medical department. She regards Virgil as a surrogate son, and she helps him transition into his new life.

Although her colleagues respect her kinship with the boy, she tends to stop them from sending him off into particularly dangerous missions. This drives them to assume that her compassion has clouded her judgment.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) We’ve got multiple patients coming in. All of them have been traumatized by the blast.

  2. (Happy) Sabrina, contact the commander! Tell him that Virgil’s awake!

  3. (Sad) They set a trap and you were caught in the blast. We did everything we could but…you’re not going to like what you see.

  4. (Angry) You had me worried sick! Cyborg or not, if you ever jump into another situation like that, you won’t come back in one piece.

Rosco

Picture
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Confident and charismatic, Rosco was Virgil’s partner in the Force. Although he is a talented Protector, his high success rate has made him arrogant, which makes him difficult to tolerate.

Despite his ego, Rosco genuinely cares for his colleagues. He regards Virgil as a surrogate brother, and often goes to great lengths to defend him on the field.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Ladies, gentlemen, hold your applause! The cavalry has arrived, and he is lookin’ good.

  2. (Happy) I’ve dispatched thirty different criminals, Virg! Still think you can keep up?

  3. (Sad) He was right there. I could’ve pulled him back before the blast reached him, but I wasn’t fast enough.

  4. (Angry) Get back here, Virgil! I’m not losing you again!

FAQ

Production Questions

Each project has its own budget, requirements, and plans for distribution. If you are cast for any of these roles, you'll be contacted by our casting representative, and will be able to negotiate your rates with them.

If you are cast, your clips will be used for internal pitching purposes. If you are cast, our students will use your clips to create pilot episodes, which will be showcased to our network of producers.

Your audition clips will not be used without your permission.

If this project generates enough funding and support from our network, we will broadcast our pilot materials to the public. Until then, selected voice actors will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

We are generating pilot materials for internal pitching purposes, and are currently unable to publicly disclose the cast list.

If we are able to generate enough funding and support to make this project public, we will disclose a full list of our cast and crew. Until then, our cast and crew will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

Submission Questions

Please ensure that you’ve sent your clips to the right email – [email protected].

Please make sure that you haven’t incorrectly typed “mediacontext”.com instead.

If all else fails, please contact Tiffany at [email protected] for assistance.

Of course! We keep all of our auditions on record. Even if you aren’t cast for this project, we’ll contact you about future opportunities.

Alternatively, you may contact us at [email protected] and tell us what your preferred accent is. We’ll let you know if any VA opportunities come up.

If a character has a "Standard American" accent, we'd like you to use a typical General American accent for all of your lines.

Sorry, friend. Auditions will be closed after the deadline we've listed. However, we'll regularly update our auditions page with new projects, and you won't be short of opportunities.

You're welcome to submit 1-3 takes per line. Compile all of your takes for each line into a single file.

Label each line according to their line number. If there are four lines for your character, you should have four files in total.

Sure. Please separate each character’s lines into separate ZIP folders, and label each file as:

“CharacterName 1_YourName_Audition”

“CharacterName 2_YourName_Audition”

You may include all of your files in the same email. Label your email subject as: "[CharacterName1], [CharacterName 2] _YourName_Audition”

We're always looking for new talent. Feel free to share your demo reel, profile, website, etc. in your audition email.

If you're shortlisted for our roles, you'll hear back from us approximately 2-5 days after the audition deadline has passed.

Please don't hate us if we don't send you a reply. Due to the number of auditions we receive, we may not be able to respond to each email. However, we appreciate your submission, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!

Unfortunately, MediaContex's team has a lot on their plate, and we may not be able to deliver feedback to individual VAs. However, we're very grateful to you for reaching out, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!
