Number 44 - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

A clairvoyant boy uses his gift to guide ghosts into the afterlife. Chaos ensues when he moves into a haunted house, which is filled with spirits that refuse to pass on.

Jason, whose father conducts fake séances for a living, has the ability to speak with the dead. Whilst his dad rattles chains and spooks his clients, Jason secretly communicates with spirits, completes their unfinished business, and helps them to pass on.

Eventually, his father’s services attract the attention of a wealthy landlady, she employs him to exorcise the ghosts in Number 44, a house that she hopes to sell. If he is able to complete this job within one year, she promises to reward their family with enough money to stop their scam for good.

At first, Jason assumes that his latest gig will be as easy as his previous assignments. However, his expectations are dashed once he meets Franklin, Mary-Ann and Okiku, three ghosts who have no unfinished business, and are simply trapped on earth because they refuse to move on.

Now, Jason must overcome his greatest challenge yet – Before the year is up, he must help these ghosts move into the light, whether they like it or not.

Character List

Jason

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Kind and compassionate, Jason uses his clairvoyant powers to guide the dead to the afterlife. Wise beyond his years, Jason understands that his father poses as a medium in order to find and contact his deceased mother. However, he does not have the courage to tell his dad to stop his charade.

Given that his father is a professional conman, Jason is a proficient liar. He lies about his powers in order to appear normal, but he wishes that he could meet people who accept him for who he is.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Hello? Are there any friendly ghosts in this house, or will I end up in a scene from Poltergeist?

  2. (Happy) I’m happy to be of service! Believe me, moving on will be the best decision you’ve made in your afterlife.

  3. (Sad) At first, my dad became a medium so that he could talk to my mum. His career became a scam once he realized that she couldn’t be found.

  4. (Angry) We’ve talked about this. Don’t make blood rain from the ceiling. It stains the woodwork!

Franklin

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 30-40
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Franklin, who died during the Great Depression, hung himself so that his impoverished family would be able to collect his life insurance.

Cranky and coarse, he delivers cutting insults about his friends, and entertains himself by frightening those who enter Number 44. Although he would never admit it, he refuses to move on out of fear. After being on earth for so long, he’s terrified of what would happen once he walks into the light.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Get it through your head, kid. We’re still on earth because we choose to be here. Practice your psychotherapy on someone who cares.

  2. (Happy) Well, I'll be darned! You aren’t as big of a screw up as I thought.

  3. (Sad) I know my family are waitin' for me beyond the light. I just don't know if they'll be happy to see me after what I put them through.

  4. (Angry) Keep it down, will ya? It’s impossible to “rest in peace” with you around.

Mary-ann

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 12
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

On her good days, Mary-Ann seems bubbly and sweet. However, she can be bratty, impatient and manipulative when she drops her adorable façade.

Mary-Ann died in a freak accident, in which she was decapitated by a steel pipe that was thrown up by a grass cutter. After her death, she chose to stay behind to take care of her parents. Although her parents are long-gone, Mary-Ann chooses to stay with Franklin and Okiku, who she secretly worries will be upset if she moves on without them.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Howdy, mister. What’s your name?

  2. (Happy) It's mighty fine to meet you! It’s been decades ever since I made a friend.

  3. (Sad) I’m in a real pickle, Jason. I want to see my parents again, but I can't leave my friends behind.

  4. (Angry) We were doing just fine before that mortal barged through our door. We’ve got to scare him off.

Okiku

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Okiku, a vengeful spirit who killed anyone who entered a house in Japan, was forced to relocate when her haunt’s last occupant burned it to the ground. She tethered herself to the girl who destroyed her house, and eventually killed her when she moved into Number 44.

Ever since then, no other tenants have lived in Number 44, and Okiku has spent decades waiting for another mortal to kill. Although she tries to kill Jason and his father in numerous ways, she is constantly foiled by Jason’s ingenuity, and his irritating attempts to befriend her.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) I have killed many mortals over the decades, child. You're just…infuriatingly difficult to add to my list.

  2. (Happy) Oh, I’ll rejoice in his demise! When do we begin?

  3. (Sad) I have been alone for as long as I can remember. Why do you insist on befriending me?

  4. (Angry) That boy is the most irritating mortal I’ve ever met. When he sees me lurking in the shadows, he runs over to give me a hug.

Each project has its own budget, requirements, and plans for distribution. If you are cast for any of these roles, you'll be contacted by our casting representative, and will be able to negotiate your rates with them.

If you are cast, your clips will be used for internal pitching purposes. If you are cast, our students will use your clips to create pilot episodes, which will be showcased to our network of producers.

Your audition clips will not be used without your permission.

If this project generates enough funding and support from our network, we will broadcast our pilot materials to the public. Until then, selected voice actors will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

We are generating pilot materials for internal pitching purposes, and are currently unable to publicly disclose the cast list.

Submission Questions

Please ensure that you’ve sent your clips to the right email – admin@mediacontex.com.

Please make sure that you haven’t incorrectly typed “mediacontext”.com instead.

If all else fails, please contact Tiffany at hello@story-sight.com for assistance.

Of course! We keep all of our auditions on record. Even if you aren’t cast for this project, we’ll contact you about future opportunities.

Alternatively, you may contact us at admin@mediacontex.com and tell us what your preferred accent is. We’ll let you know if any VA opportunities come up.

Sorry, friend. Auditions will be closed after the deadline we've listed. However, we'll regularly update our auditions page with new projects, and you won't be short of opportunities.

You're welcome to submit 1-3 takes per line. Compile all of your takes for each line into a single file.

Label each line according to their line number. If there are four lines for your character, you should have four files in total.

If you're shortlisted for our roles, you'll hear back from us approximately 2-5 days after the audition deadline has passed.

Please don't hate us if we don't send you a reply. Due to the number of auditions we receive, we may not be able to respond to each email. However, we appreciate your submission, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!

Unfortunately, MediaContex's team has a lot on their plate, and we may not be able to deliver feedback to individual VAs. However, we're very grateful to you for reaching out, and we hope that you'll continue to support our projects!
