Lightspeed - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

The son of a famous superhero inherits his father’s powers. Instead of using his new abilities to fight crime, he uses them to commit a string of robberies.

Diego Rivera, the estranged son of his city’s greatest superhero, hopes to make his city a better place. He gets his wish when he inherits his father’s super-speed on his eighteenth birthday.

In order to fight crime with his newfound powers, Diego reconnects with his father, Turbo. He admits that he had to dismiss his previous sidekick, and appoints Diego as their replacement.

Unfortunately, Diego’s dream job is ruined once he discovers that Turbo only fights crime for clout and money. Moreover, he uses his influence to ensure that the rich stay in power, so that they can continue to exploit the city’s poor community.

Together with Novablast, an ex-sidekick who Turbo had framed in order to protect his reputation, Diego devises an unorthodox plan against the city’s corrupted elite. He poses as Lightspeed, a supervillain who steals from Turbo’s wealthy allies, and distributes his gains to citizens who have been wronged.

Character List

Diego

Picture
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Optimistic and visionary, Diego is a student activist who wants to change the world. Chivalrous and compassionate, Diego has a heart for others, and willingly helps those in need.

At first, Diego has a strict code of “right and wrong”. However, his rigid moral perspectives are challenged when he finds out that his hero is a fraud, and he decides to address his city’s wide income gap by distributing stolen assets to the poor.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) I always believed that Turbo was a hero. Now, I realise that he’s a fraud, and I believe that this city deserves to know the truth.

  2. (Happy) This is amazing! If Turbo makes me his sidekick, I can make this city a better place!

  3. (Sad) I’m so sorry. I didn’t realise how much he hurt you.

  4. (Angry) You were my idol, man! How could you do this to our city?

Janet

Picture
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Dependable and trustworthy, Janet is Diego’s best friend and confidant. She is the only civilian who knows about his powers, and loyally helps him keeps his identity a secret.

Given that Janet is an aspiring journalist, she is aware of her city’s income gap. Although she isn’t thrilled that Diego is pursued by the cops, she appreciates how his plan can help the disadvantaged.

She uses her knowledge about the city to plan Diego’s heists, and devises strategies to help him evade the authorities.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) You’ve got three minutes until the security system comes back online. Good luck, kiddo.

  2. (Happy) Here are the blueprints you asked for. Hacking into the federal database was easier than I expected.

  3. (Worried) You’re nuts, Diego. If you’re caught, you could spend decades in jail.

  4. (Angry) For some reason, the mayor refuses to answer legitimate questions about his policies! Something’s not right.

Turbo

Picture
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Charismatic and confident, Turbo is regarded as his city’s greatest superhero. Unbeknownst to its citizens, Turbo frames individuals from disadvantaged communities as criminals, and falsely arrests them so that he can collect the cash reward for “saving the day”.

Calculative and mercenary, Turbo uses his reputation to ensure that his wealthy allies stay in office. However, his plan hits a road bump once Diego proves to be a supervillain who he may not be able to defeat.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Thank you, citizen. I’m happy to be of service.

  2. (Happy) What can I say? It is an honor and privilege to be your hero.

  3. (Sad/Pretentious) She was one of the best sidekick I ever had. I have no idea why she turned into a criminal.

  4. (Angry) I’ve got this city in the palm of my hand. If he wants to play dirty, we’ll just have to beat him at his game.

Novablast

Picture
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Novablast, who has the power to generate supersonic blasts, was once an aspiring hero who started her career as Turbo’s sidekick.

Assertive and vocal, Novablast threatened to reveal Turbo’s lies to the public if he did not improve his behavior. This caused Turbo to fire her, and he ruined her reputation in order to discourage other heroes from working with her.

Although Novablast insists that she cares about her city, her past experiences have hardened her heart. This causes Diego to question if she sincerely wants to help the disadvantaged, or if she only wants revenge against her former employer.

Lines:

  1. (Sarcastic) Turbo’s sidekick, eh? (Scoffs) Congratulations, kid. You’ve got the gig of a lifetime.

  2. (Happy) Exactly! Think of yourself as a modern-day Robin Hood. You’ll steal from the rich and give to the poor.

  3. (Bitter) Once I realized how much he hurt people, I wanted him to stop what he was doing. Instead of changing for the better, he ruined my career.

  4. (Angry) That man ruined my reputation! I won’t rest until he gets what he deserves.
